Last night in the news there was an article which I want to comment on.
It was about dyslexia of which Billy has along with his dyspraxia.
It highlighted what a raw deal children with this condition get here in New Zealand.
If Billy or any other 10 year old with dyslexia lived in Australia, America or England he would be entitled to a reader writer. It also highlighted the fact that primary school teachers come out of teaching colleges not being able to recognise this common learning difficulty. Apparently 1 in 10 children have it yet teachers arent taught how to meet the needs of these children properly.

Individuals with dyslexia have trouble with reading and spelling and those with
dyspraxia with co-ordination.

There are however, some overlaps between group symptoms, notably in the area of speech and
language difficulties. Many people with dyslexia have a history of such problems and
Stackhouse & Wells (1991) proposing that the conditions may be strongly linked. Within the
dyspraxia group, there is a subgroup of children who have particular difficulties with speech
production and are described as having developmental verbal dyspraxia. ((This is what Billy was diagnosed with at 4/5 years of age))

This article is particularly interesting esp from page 2 onwards
